For nearly four decades, Tradebank has been helping businesses unlock the value of unused capacity, creating opportunities for growth without relying solely on cash. At the helm of the organization today is Valerie Hale, CEO of Tradebank, whose leadership journey reflects resilience, innovation, and a deep commitment to helping business owners thrive.
Founded in 1987 by Valerie’s father, John Davis, Tradebank began with a simple but powerful concept: businesses can trade products and services with one another through a network, preserving cash while generating new revenue opportunities. What started as her father’s entrepreneurial vision eventually became Valerie’s life work, although she admits that was never part of her original plan.
“I initially joined the company in 1996 to help out temporarily,” Hale recalls. “Nearly 30 years later, I’m still here.”
Before Tradebank, Hale managed a restaurant in Gwinnett County. She entered the company through operations, later expanding into media, technology, and marketing roles. In 2016, she stepped into the CEO position as her father retired after battling Alzheimer’s disease.
While inheriting leadership of a family business can be daunting, Hale discovered strengths she never anticipated. Today, she credits much of her success to relationship-building and a commitment to continuous growth.
“I’ve learned that leadership is less about mechanics and more about people,” she says. “It’s understanding businesses, building trust, communicating effectively, and helping others succeed.”
That philosophy extends to her advice for aspiring women leaders. Hale encourages women to develop a growth mindset, embrace lifelong learning, and cultivate resilience.
“You can’t control every situation, but you can control how you respond,” she explains. “Always focus on becoming a better version of yourself.”
Turning Excess Capacity into Opportunity
For business owners unfamiliar with barter exchanges, Tradebank offers a modern approach that goes far beyond traditional one-for-one trading.
“Tradebank helps businesses turn excess capacity into revenue,” Hale explains. “We help businesses trade what they have for what they want without spending cash.”
Instead of requiring direct exchanges between two companies, Tradebank operates through a structured network where members earn trade dollars from one business and spend them with another. This multidirectional system creates flexibility and expands opportunities for participants.
The model serves a wide variety of companies, particularly service-based businesses that have open appointment slots or available capacity. Members can use trade dollars for advertising, accounting, legal services, travel, employee incentives, marketing support, and countless other business or personal expenses.
One of the greatest benefits, according to Hale, is cash conservation.
“When businesses can move expenses from their cash ledger to their trade ledger, it allows them to reinvest cash back into their operations,” she says.
Relationships Remain the Foundation
While technology continues transforming nearly every industry, Hale believes meaningful relationships remain at the heart of business success.
Tradebank maintains locations throughout the Southeast, including Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina, Virginia, and Canada. Across every market, franchise owners are encouraged to become deeply involved in their local business communities.
“You can’t build relationships sitting in an office,” Hale says. “Networking allows you to learn about people, make connections, and find ways to help other businesses grow.”
That commitment to relationship-building extends throughout the Tradebank network. Brokers work closely with clients to understand their goals, identify opportunities, and connect them with valuable resources.
“Trust is the foundation of everything we do,” Hale explains. “Our brokers build genuine relationships with members and help them maximize the value of the network.”
The Future of Tradebank
As someone passionate about technology, Hale is particularly excited about the future. She has overseen significant digital transformation within the organization, from proprietary software and mobile applications to automated transaction systems.
Today, Tradebank is investing heavily in artificial intelligence and automated client-matching technology designed to connect businesses with relevant opportunities faster than ever before.
“We’re creating systems that can recommend businesses, services, and opportunities based on what members need,” Hale says. “Technology allows us to make the process easier, faster, and more effective.”
Yet despite the advancements ahead, Hale remains focused on a simple mission.
“The legacy I hope to leave is that we’ve created an environment where business owners can thrive,” she says. “If we can improve their lifestyle, help them grow their companies, and give them another tool to succeed, that’s what matters most.”
Through innovation, community engagement, and a steadfast commitment to helping others, Valerie Hale is ensuring that Tradebank continues to empower businesses across Georgia and beyond for generations to come.
